Crops in season in February 2012, and other timely information:

February brings with it Spring and the ability to buy locally, especially in the deep South where fresh strawberries are available in Florida and Texas, followed by California. Cold weather crops, like spinach, some lettuces, peas, kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, leeks and early onions being harvested in all but the colder regions. Many markets still have fresh winter squash, stored from last Autumn.

A true farmer's market is one where more than one farmer shows up with his bulk produce to sell direct to the consumer!  They're rare these days and many grocery stores (like Harry's and Whole Foods) are labeling themselves as "farmer's markets" and simply masquerading!)  Here's the real list of farmer's markets in Central-northwestern Minnesota. And if you know of one I missed and want to add it or correct the information, please let me know!
